Bitdeer’s Move From Bitcoin Mining to AI Infrastructure

Bitdeer is moving beyond Bitcoin mining by using its power and data-center infrastructure to expand into AI computing and support the growing demand for high-performance AI infrastructure.

Bitdeer’s Move From Bitcoin Mining to AI Infrastructure

For years, Bitcoin mining companies have been known for one thing: finding affordable electricity and using it to run thousands of specialized mining machines.

But Bitdeer is gradually becoming an example of how that business can evolve.

The company, led by Jihan Wu, has built its business around Bitcoin mining and mining infrastructure. Wu himself has been involved in Bitcoin since 2011 and was one of the co-founders of Bitmain, one of the world's major Bitcoin mining hardware companies.

Today, however, Bitdeer is looking beyond Bitcoin.

The reason is fairly simple. The infrastructure needed for large-scale Bitcoin mining has a lot in common with what the rapidly growing AI industry needs: large amounts of electricity, industrial sites, power connections, cooling systems, networking, and teams capable of operating large numbers of machines.

Instead of treating its existing infrastructure as something that can only be used for Bitcoin mining, Bitdeer is exploring how it can also support AI data centers.

Jihan Wu noted that Bitdeer has access to about three gigawatts of power capacity and future energy projects globally, with roughly two gigawatts based in the US. They are looking at repurposing some of these sites into AI data centers. The straightforward conversions could be up and running in a year, while the more complex builds might take two to three years.

This is an important part of the company's strategy.

Building a large AI data center from scratch can take years, particularly when new power connections, substations, permits, and transmission infrastructure are required. **Bitcoin miners **have already spent years dealing with many of these same challenges.

Bitdeer therefore has something that new AI companies urgently need: access to power and the infrastructure around it.

The company has also moved into AI computing through Bitdeer AI, providing access to high-performance computing resources for businesses, startups, and researchers. The company has highlighted the use of NVIDIA H100 GPUs and has worked with businesses that need powerful computing without building their own large facilities.

Interestingly, Bitdeer is not abandoning Bitcoin mining in the process.

Wu has explained that Bitcoin mining can still be useful while AI projects are being developed. If a new power project is ready before an AI customer or data center is ready, Bitcoin mining can provide an immediate use for that electricity.

That creates a flexible model: mine Bitcoin today, build AI infrastructure for tomorrow.

The bigger story behind Bitdeer is therefore not simply that a Bitcoin mining company is entering AI.

It is that the company is beginning to treat power, land, grid connections, cooling, and computing infrastructure as assets that can serve more than one purpose.

Bitcoin may have been the original business, but for Bitdeer, the same infrastructure built around mining could become part of the much larger AI computing market.
